Cord alternative Brits Awards

Ahead of the annual music awards ceremony on Feb 25th, we thought it would be informative (read: fun) to put together a list of who would have been nominated had Cord been calling the shots.

There are currently no music awards cerrmonies in the UK that tick all the boxes of a) representing a wide spectrum of genre’s and formats, b) reach a large audience, and c) reward talent and creativity over commerical reach.

The Mercury Prize comes closest, but is limited to best album. The MOBO and Kerrang Awards are well respected in their own fields, but are limited by genre. The NME Awards are popular and still growing, but it’s still difficult to see them gaining a prominent TV slot.

Looking specifically at the Brits now. All formats are covered and the genre pool is pretty diverse, even though there is a heavy pop leaning. The ceremony is still hugely popular, with millions tuning in on TV, national treasures Ant and Dec presenting, and heavyweights like Madonna performing. However, we couldn’t help but we a little baffled by some of the selections this year. Is George Ezra’s ‘Wanted On Voyage’ really better than ‘LP2’, ‘Dead’ and ‘Syro’? Are ‘Lily Allen’ and ‘Paloma Faith’ two of our top five female solo artists? And most bafflingly…how have 5 Seconds of Summer crept into the ‘International Group’ nominees?!

The beauty of music is that it’s subjective, so here are our takes on who we would have made it to nominee stage. Feel free to vote on who would take each award.
