CORD Attends… Macy Gray @ O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire

As is customary of our consumer-driven culture, there are certain expectations that come when the 14th February comes rolling. Society dictates that you spend it cuddled on the sofa with your soulmate – in the form of Netflix or another human being – but we instead decided to go on a mate date consisting of dinner at Mr Falafel followed by seeing Macy Gray at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. And it was awesome.

Though it certainly wasn’t lacking in references to romance – “We came all the way from LA to celebrate Valentine’s Day with you sexy people!” – Gray’s three outfit changes, bejewelled mic stand and cover of ‘Creep’ ascertained that the short but sweet show was anything but a schmooze-fest.

Instead, the Grammy award winner channeled old-school nightclub charm, dripping in bling, sequins and furs and threw in a cheeky rendition of ‘Do You Think I’m Sexy’ in the mix –  even her backing band kept the party vibe going by sporting flashing red-lighted ties. All of this topped off with a triumphant take on ‘I Try’, which had the entire venue (both the singles and couples) belting out the classic like it was 1999. Nevermind not having anyone to come home to, we could have gone all night long…
