If you haven’t started watching Netflix Original X Marvel Television series ‘Luke Cage’ yet then get watching, or should we say listening. After gauging on the 13 episodes of season 1 we were hooked on the soundtrack and found ourselves on a musical journey. The show has put a huge emphasis on it’s musical choice and has made it stick out to the audience because of this. There seems to be surge of tv shows focusing more on the musical aspect to the show with the likes of Empire, The Get Down and now Luke Cage incorporating performances for musicians old and new as well as original composed pieces.
The show is based in Harlem New York, which is known to be the birthing ground from some of the most influential artist of all time. With one of the main scenes being set in the villain, Cottonmouth’s, club The Harlem Paradise there is constant references to musical greats be it visual homages, live performances or background music.
The shows composers Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (Tribe Called Quest) who bring the show to life with a mix of hip hop beats and classic Soul and Funk records have been praised by the Director Cheo Hodari Coker for their contribution to the show claiming that “Musically, they elevated it to another level,”
Season 1 of Luke Cage’s soundtrack include music from Faith Evans, Curtis Mayfield, Charles Bradley, Adrian Younge, Wu-Tan-Clan and Raphael Saadiq.
